Alana has completed a Bachelor of Computing at the University of Guelph and is currently completing the second year of her Masters degree in Applied Computer Science. Her interests include adaptive systems, artificial intelligence and applying cognitive psychology to these fields. Alana also enjoys running, biking, and many other outdoor activities! Attending the 2006 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing inspired Alana to spread her motivation and support to other females with a new initiative: in 2007 she founded CISters.
Madeleine is completing the 3rd year of a Bachelor of Computing with an area of application in Studio Art …and these are ALL the normal things about her.
When this triplet isn't sitting in one of the computer labs with some form of caffeine by her side, you'll probably find her stuffed in a darkroom making photo prints or in an even darker closet rolling film. She’s driven to this state by her love of photography. Her fascination with imagery expands into cinematography as well. On the other hand, when Madeleine is in the computer lab, she’s more likely to be debugging another lost soul’s code than developing on her own. She was a great resource to her peers long before her current position as an undergraduate TA.
…If you want to be Madeleine's hero forever, give her sushi.
Meghan is currently completing the last year of her undergraduate degree in Honours Mathematics & Computing and Information Science at the University of Guelph. Throughout her undergraduate career, she’s never lived the same day twice! Meghan’s sense of adventure and enthusiasm have lead her to theatre, philanthropy, field hockey and the Rubik’s cube! When news came of a new organization encouraging female involvement in computer science related studies, she knew she had to be a part of it.
Annie is completing her 3rd year of studies in the field of Information Systems and Human Behaviour (a fairly new field of study exploring computer science and its social implications). She contributes to her university as a treasurer for off-campus students. In her non-existent spare time, she gives voice and violin lessons. Annie may not be a code monkey but she is a hardcore Guitar Hero, working hard and playing a spillion times harder!
Sofija loves to jump head-first into things she knows little about…yada yada yada…she is completing the 3rd year of a Bachelor of Computing at the University of Guelph. Some CIS students have theorized over her sanity, but that’s only because she’s chosen to pair this field of study with a Minor in English. This combination is the result of a fascination with culture, a desire to learn anything new and a spontaneous approach to life: when you jump into a completely foreign experience, there’s a chance you’ll become something you couldn’t have imagined … and there’s something thrilling about escaping your own limitations.
Undergraduate 1st Year - Ali Tremblay
Ali is studying under a Bachelor of Computing with a Minor in Studio Art. Like all first year students, when she should be coding Ali isn't:
when a person can juggle and make balloon animals, it is safe to extrapolate that some time in her life is well spent. Other vices include reading fantasy and sci fi novels, talking on the phone and listening to music. In pursuit of a more productive way to escape her course work, Ali has joined the CISters initiative.
Undergraduate 2nd Year - Lisa Munro
Lisa is in her second year of a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computing and Information Science, with a Minor in English -- ostensibly as preparation to write a rambling, Joycian novel about robots with artificial-but-no-less-tragic feelings. She enjoys daytime television, folk music, and procrastination.
Undergraduate 3rd Year - Megumi Suzuki
Megumi completed a college degree in computer programming at Seneca College in 2003. She is furthering her education with a Bachelor of Computing at the University of Guelph and at present, she is on a co-op term at RIM. She displays talent and enthusiasm about increasing her knowledge of theory and applications of computer science.
Graduate Representative - Melanie Veltman
Melanie received the Baccalaureate in Arts degree (with Honours) in Computing and Information Science from the University of Guelph in 2007. She is currently studying spatial relations in image processing under Dr. Pascal Matsakis in pursuit of the MSc. degree. Her research interests include Image Annotation and Object Recognition in Image Processing, and Natural Language Processing. Melanie is a socially responsible consumer and is passionate about organic and sustainable food and health practices. She also enjoys sewing and reading - especially, on gender inequality issues ;)
